As each person is different from one another (except for monozygotic twins who share the same DNA) there are some DNA sequences that are unique and are to be found in a single person only. This kind of DNA is called microsatellites that are sequences where certain DNA motifs are repeated from 5 to 50 times. They occur at thousands of location within an organism genome and they have a much higher mutation rate than any other kind of sequences leading to a high genetic diversity and thus it’s a strong analytic tool for DNA profiling in kinship analysis for example. By studying these sequences, identifying different individuals from a single species becomes possible.
